Study May Cough Up New Treatment For A Tickly Throat
Scientists investigating the cough reflex have discovered a new group of molecules on the surface of nerve cells that make us cough when irritated.

Some Health Groups Increase Lobbying Spending, But Only A Slight Rise Overall
"Drug makers, advocacy groups, biotechnology firms and insurance companies have ratcheted up efforts to offer their two cents - and in most cases much, much more - in influencing the health care legislation now working its way through Congress," The New York Times reports. "Many familiar health groups in recent months have increased lobbying spending by more than $1 million, according to second-quarter lobbying records filed on Monday with the Senate Office of Public Records." Those groups include AARP and The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. Drug makers GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis, along with insurance company Allstate and biotechnology firm Amgen have also invested significantly more in lobbying activities."

Middle-aged women who had migraine headaches with aura (sensory disturbances, such as with vision, balance or speech) had a higher prevalence of brain lesions when they were older, compared to individuals without similar types of headaches, according to a study in the June 24 issue of JAMA.

First Anchorage Novel H1N1 confirmed, Alaska

A 28-year-old Anchorage man has become Anchorage"s first confirmed case of the novel H1N1 flu virus. The patient first reported feeling ill on June 1, 2009, and was swabbed for influenza at a clinic on June 3. The sample tested positive for novel H1N1 on June 9. The patient was given antiviral medication at the clinic and was feeling better three days later. No one in his immediate family has reported feeling ill. The patient has no record of travel in the past 30 days. State and local health officials are closely monitoring the presence of H1N1 in Alaska and are prepared to respond as appropriate. The state of Alaska Section of Epidemiology tracks H1N1 cases in Alaska by region. The table is updated daily and is available here. Health officials with both the state of Alaska and Municipality of Anchorage remind everyone that the best way to protect themselves from H1N1 and other viruses is to practice good hand hygiene, proper cough etiquette, and to stay home if they are sick.
