APhA Publishes Reference On Drugs And Substances Of Abuse
The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) will publish in mid-July the second edition of Pagliaros" Comprehensive Guide to Drugs and Substances of Abuse. Written by veteran authors Louis A. Pagliaro and Ann Marie Pagliaro, the reference includes more than 100 monographs-11 of them new-dealing with each of the major drugs and substances of abuse used in North America, from acetone to zopiclone.

A close relative of the microorganism that causes tuberculosis in humans has been found to form spores. This is a sensational finding because researchers have long been convinced that these kinds of bacteria - the mycobacteria - were incapable of forming spores. Leif Kirsebom"s research group at Uppsala University now has photographic proof, obtained while working with the bacteria that causes tuberculosis in fish, to challenge this long-held belief. Their discovery, which has attracted much attention from other scientists, might constitute a new turn in the fight against human tuberculosis.

Innovative Ultrasound Provides Cutting Edge Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse Technology For Liver Imaging

The Radiology department at King"s College Hospital is now benefiting from enhanced ultrasound image quality and optimised workflow following the installation of an ACUSON S2000™ from Siemens Healthcare. The hospital also uses the S2000"s Virtual Touch™ application for Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) imaging to assist with scanning the liver. The S2000 is a next generation ultrasound system offering superior image quality to improve diagnostic confidence, plus ensures user and patient comfort through its adaptive ergonomic design. It is being used at the hospital predominantly for contrast ultrasound of the liver and testicular cases as well as more general scanning. The Virtual Touch application uses acoustic energy to compress tissue and provide qualitative and quantitative assessments of deep tissue stiffness. This is particularly beneficial for examinations of the liver and is also a quick, non-invasive solution for diagnosis. The system includes an 18L6 HD transducer for use in testicular ultrasound examinations at the hospital.
