Obama Urges Groups To Stop Attacks
"President Obama, strategizing... with congressional leaders about health-care reform, complained that liberal advocacy groups ought to drop their attacks on Democratic lawmakers and devote their energy to promoting passage of comprehensive legislation," The Washington Post reports. "In a pre-holiday call with half a dozen top House and Senate Democrats, Obama expressed his concern over advertisements and online campaigns targeting moderate Democrats, whom they criticize for not being fully devoted to "true" health-care reform." In the call, "Obama said he is hoping left-leaning organizations that worked on his behalf in the presidential campaign will now rally support for "advancing legislation" that fulfills his goal of expanding coverage, controlling rising costs and modernizing the health system."

My Prostate Cancer Operation - A Personal Diary
This is a personal account of my battle so far with prostate cancer. My name is Christian Nordqvist, 53, Editor of Medical News Today. On 26th of March, 2009, I underwent a radical prostatectomy - in other words, I had my prostate taken out. A biopsy had detected cancerous tissue in the prostate. Before that, a routine check-up had revealed higher than normal levels of PSA in my blood. After discussing various options with my urologist, we decided that radical prostatectomy was best for me. There were two compelling reasons for this - I am 53 (relatively young for this type of disease), and I have a family history of prostate cancer.

Poniard Rally To Continue: Strong Efficacy And Safety Data From Picoplatin
Poniard announced positive Phase II data from its two trials in CRC and CRPC with picoplatin this morning, including efficacy that was comparable to the current standard of care, with a significantly improved safety profile. We believe that these data provide further evidence of picoplatin"s favorable efficacy and safety profile in two more large oncology markets, in addition to SCLC, and position picoplatin as a platform treatment that can provide solutions in multiple oncology settings. We believe that given these data from CRC and CRPC, in addition to the anticipated Phase III SPEAR data in SCLC, will attract the interest of multiple players and we expect that Poniard will be able to at least secure a large pharma partnership sometime this summer, unless a company like Sanofi (SNY Not Rated), Takeda (TKD Not rated), or Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY Not Rated) decide to step in and acquire the whole company, for rights to both the IV and oral version of picoplatin.

New Study Highlights Monstrous Cost Of Smoking To UK, Says Heart Charity

In response to a study, funded by the British Heart Foundation and published online by Tobacco Control Journal , Betty McBride, Policy & Communications Director, at the British Heart Foundation, said: "We are now spending over ÷£5bn a year dealing with the health consequences of smoking. This is money being drained out of the NHS as a direct result of something we have the power to prevent. "Yet the true tragedy of this monstrous figure is the lives that are cut short or ruined as a result of smoking. "This study shows exactly why we need the strongest possible measures to control the sale of tobacco. "The Health Bill, going through parliament now, gives the UK Government the perfect opportunity to act. By legislating bans on point of sale display and cigarette vending machines we can stop today"s children being lured into becoming the next generation of sick smokers. "Only with a comprehensive tobacco control plan in all four nations of the UK will we really tackle the financial and human cost of smoking." According to the study: - Smoking was directly responsible for 19% of all deaths in the UK - Smoking cost the NHS over ÷£5bn, 5.5% of the NHS"s total healthcare cost. - An estimated 110,000 deaths in the UK could be attributed to smoking, causing the deaths of over 27% of men and nearly 11% of women. - In England the total number of deaths figure was around 90,000 in Wales 6,000, in Northern Ireland 2,500 and in Scotland 11,000. - Over ÷£2.5bn was calculated to have been spent on cardiovascular diseases as a direct result of smoking.
