Cancer Treatment Controls Macular Edema Related To Diabetes And To Cataract Surgery
This month"s Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, reports on the use of bevacizumab (Avastin) to benefit diabetic patients with macular edema as well as people who develop cystoid macular edema after cataract surgery. Bevacizumab is also used to treat some cancers. A third study describes methods that could make cataract surgery safer for diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients. DR is the major threat to vision in working-age people, a health issue that will only intensify if cases triple by 2050 as predicted.

NAO Issue New Report And Research Autism Asks: 'Falling Through The Cracks': Why Is The Outcome So Poor For Adults With Autism?
The National Audit Office (NAO) on Friday released findings from a new report exploring the problems and challenges of supporting adults with autism. The aim of the report was to assess current service provision in areas including: health, social care, education, benefits and employment support. It also identified how these areas could be made more effective, efficient and appropriate to the needs of adults with autism and their carers.

Rat Model Of Hepatic Encephalopathy And Prehepatic Portal Hypertension

A research article published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology refers. The research team lead by Dr. Gabriela Beatriz Acosta, observed that the activity of GS was increased in the hippocampus in PH rats. There was a significant decrease in glutamate uptake in both brain areas, which was more marked in the hippocampus. The decrease in glutamate uptake might be caused by deficient transport function and persistent glutamate activity, which is not metabolized. This leads to severe damage in the cells of the central nervous system (CNS), associated with the presence of moderate ammonia concentration in the blood, as observed in this model. These results demonstrated that partial stricture of the portal vein is able to modify normal function in important areas of the rat brain. These results suggest that, in PH this pathology, there are differences between both regions of the brain, possibly caused by the toxic metabolic action of ammonia and glutamate, and perhaps glutamine, in the brain, among other factors. Using this model, it may be possible to understand more clearly the mechanism of toxicity and defense of the brain against the two toxic substances: ammonia and the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate.
